A World Without Local Business

Over the weekend I took my son to get a new pair of running shoes. With the shop local idea in mind, I took him to The Runners Den and I have to say it was an awesome experience! He measured out my son’s foot and brought me a few options for his high arched feet. The personal touch and expert knowledge were unmatched!

Afterwards my son and I went to the Frog Pond where we go often and I’m known by name by a few of the employees there (And if you look closely they let me display my business card).

Then we went and played basketball at our local YMCA, where there are always a lot of friendly faces and a great atmosphere.

I love taking advantage of all the unique local businesses that Owen Sound has to offer because they provide:

  • Specific expertise of their products and services
  • Support of a local economy
  • Fresh meals and produce
  • Personal attention with customers
  • The support of local manufactures

Just to name a few things!

My excellent local experience lead me to wonder what would Owen Sound be like without its local businesses? If the city was just box stores and franchise?

A city without a farmers market or 100-mile store to provide us with all the local produce, bake goods, meats, ect.

A city without local cafes and restaurants that provide us with great unique drinks, food and local talents.

Local chiropractors and physicians.

Hobby stores, toy stores, bowling alleys, billiard halls… I mean the list could go on and on.  I for one would miss our local businesses; miss the uniqueness that they bring to Owen Sound.

Now I’m not saying that there is no room for box stores and franchise they do give to our community. I’m just asking that you give other smaller business a chance at your business. You wont be disappointed!

I cant agree more Brad… We need to support our local businesses! It saddens me to see a boarded up storefront where there was once a local shop. Any urban planner will tell you that this is the start of urban decay.
